Calcutta High Court on Tuesday rejected Sujay Krishna Bhadra’s bail plea. Better known as “Kalighater Kaku”, Bhadra was arrested in connection with alleged irregularities in recruitments in state-aided schools.
Bhadra’s counsel Kishore Datta cited his wife’s death as a reason for the bail plea.
“My client should be granted bail so that he can be present during the last rites of his wife,” Datta submitted.
The counsel appearing for the ED opposed the plea and claimed that there were chances of his tampering with evidence if he were released on bail.
After hearing both sides, Justice Tirthankar Ghosh of Calcutta High Court rejected the bail plea.
The court said Bhadra could be released on parole from the correctional home and it was a decision that the prison authorities shouldtake.
Bani Krishna, Bhadra’s wife, died early on Tuesday. She was in her early 60s, a family member said.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Bhadra on May 30 in connection with its ongoing probe into the school recruitment scam.
Bhadra is now in judicial custody and lodged at the Presidency Correctional Home.
